The ancestors of lovely, young and impoverished Lady Judith Elliot, the last of their line, are upset that she is about to sell the anscestral home, Barnsley, to Millicent Malone, an American, who wants to buy it to prove that spirits, which so far have chased away all buyers, do exist. Unfortunately for Millicent, the spirits refuse to cooperate and put in an appearance when Judith and her fiancee Archie put on a seance to prove that Barnsley is haunted. In a twist of fate, Judith falls for Millicent's nephew Henry. The ancestors unmask Archie after Judith persuades him to "materialise" as a spirit. Archie, annoyed at being exposed and compromised by Judith, exorcises them behind Judith's back. I an ingenious third act, the complications are happily resolved, but not before Millicent has given up on spirits and Henry has experienced the shock of his life.
